Stripe buys OpenRouter

Stripe is reportedly finalizing a deal to acquire OpenRouter, the model-routing layer thousands of apps use to switch between LLM providers, for more than $7 billion. A payments company just bought the toll booth between apps and models. If your product routes through OpenRouter, your dependency now has a very different owner — worth knowing where your fallback path goes.

Nvidia opens Nemotron Lightning

Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, a 30B mixture-of-experts model with only 3B active parameters and a 1M-token context, under the permissive OpenMDW-1.1 licence — weights, training data and recipes included. It claims up to 4x faster output and runs on a single GPU. Alongside it came NeMo Switchyard, an open-source Rust router that picks the cheapest capable model per step of an agent workflow. The chip vendor is now shipping the model AND the router above it — the week's second big bet that routing, not raw capability, is where agent cost gets decided.

Alibaba passes Meta and Google

Alibaba's open models crossed 3 billion downloads, overtaking both Meta and Google to lead the open-weights ecosystem. The milestone lands as Chinese labs ship faster and cheaper than their US counterparts. The default open model your team reaches for is increasingly Chinese — check whether that's a licensing or compliance problem before it ships.

DeepSeek ships an agent harness

DeepSeek open-sourced Harness, an MIT-licensed agent runtime where every layer — inference, tools, state, execution — is a swappable plugin, and which is deliberately not tied to DeepSeek's own models (it adapts to Anthropic, OpenAI, Bedrock, Vertex, Azure). It cleared 33,000 GitHub stars within hours. Agent reliability is becoming infrastructure, not prompt craft — read this before hand-rolling another orchestration loop.

Agent security draws $270M

Three security startups raised $270 million in five days on the same thesis: AI agents inside enterprise systems have created an attack surface existing tooling was never built for. Zenity took $125M, Obsidian $85M at a $1.1B valuation, and Oligo $60M. Investors are pricing agent risk before most teams have audited their own. If your agents hold credentials, you are the attack surface being funded against.
